Lucy Jordan
— Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann
10th September, 2020 — 31st October, 2020Press release
Galerie Allen is pleased to present Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann’s third solo exhibition at the gallery titled after Marianne Faithfull's song, The Ballad of Lucy Jordan. Originally written by Shel Silverstein, writer and children's poet, the song unravels the disillusionment and mental deterioration of a suburban housewife. Faithfull’s sonic rendition and self-portrayal in the music video sets the structure of Badaut Haussmann’s exhibition addressing resistant architecture in cinema for female characters and her particular interest in two films: Maîtresse by Barbet Schroeder (1976) and SAFE by Todd Haynes (1995). Deepening her investigations into domesticity, functional sculptures and society’s conventions this exhibition creates an installed environment hosting new works including a wall painting, a sound piece and living room sculptures. Lucy Jordan's exhibition resonates in a quite particular way during the Covid-19 crisis we are all currently experiencing and the question of isolation in a domestic space, whether it represents a space of safety, freedom, control, suffocation and/or danger.
